Eleventh episode, and I still have opinions! If you haven't already, read my review for episode one, episode two, episode three, episode four, episode five, episode six, episode seven, episode eight, episode nine, and episode ten. As before I've already given you a spoiler warning in the title and the cover photo and here's a third. Consider yourself warned. I waited a week and we finally have more content for me to use to make more content. Stunning! Mixed feelings on the episode (omg how many times have I written that) but this time it has to do with the line between sincerity and camp. So let's go! 1. Unf.2. Iconic. Should have won.3. Ummm...4. No. no. no. no.Judge praise for this look let me know that this wasn't really a runway challenge. This was a writing and voice over challenge. The visuals may have been final deciding factors, but overall, this was definitely a writing challenge. To jump into my problem with the challenge, Ru spends most of the walkthrough giving the queens advice that they really have to dig deep and get personal with their insecurities. That's fine, but like, nuanced insecurities don't really translate to a runway look? Which is like, why I think that it's more of a writing challenge. Like what if a queen's insecurity is her depression or suicidal tendencies? How are you supposed to make an 'evil' look out of that. In reality, they were making a 'good' look and a 'fictional bully of the good character's insecurities' look that was completely detached from the specifics of the insecurities. To make things worse, they rely so heavily on this double presence gimmick, that any sincerity is shot. They're acting as characters when they're supposed to be explaining something so sincere, and I found the dissonance almost cringe worthy. That's all. 5. Yes. Icon. Werq.6. Yes. Icon. Werq.7. I knew from the spoilers that this was coming...... and it felt disingenuous. I would say this lip sync was even closer in level than Kameron v. Eureka, but where was the double sashay.
Part of me thinks that Kameron was kept strictly to have a 'Kameron has now won three lip syncs' be an iconic record break, and not because of actual performance. IDK. I would say #JusticeForCracker but outside of Drag Race she's already become an icon, so I think she's already got her justice. See y'all next week.
